Consequences of lax "Gun Safety" in Philadelphia 1833

[JUVENILE GUN SAFETY GONE HORRIBLY WRONG IN 1833]. The disobedient children punished; a story of two children that killed each other. [BOUND WITH]: Mary Scott; or, the child I loved at Sunday School

Philadelphia: American Sunday-School Union, 1827-1833 (ca.). Together 2 works in one volume, 24mo. Ad 1: 22 pp., text illustrations, including two full-page woodblock prints. Ad 2: 35, [1], pp., steel-engraved vignette at end. Contemporary marbled boards backed in black cloth, binding extremities worn, light foxing, a very good and sound copy. Very good. Item #3710

Ad. 1: A MORALITY TALE OF TWO CHILDREN WHO SHOT AND KILLED EACH OTHER WITH THEIR UNCLE'S "UNLOADED" PISTOLS. The alarming frontispiece depicts the two children, Charles and his unnamed sister, lying dead on the floor and covered with blood, Uncle John's "unloaded" pistols beside them, the smoke of gunpowder still lingering in the air. Gun-safety morality tales of the 19th century are uncommon. It would appear that no digital surrogate of this book exists.

Inexplicably, on pp. 8-9 was printed a completely unrelated poem entitled "The Giddy Girl" (apparently published here for the first and only time): little Helen Andrews continually ignores her mother, who forbade the child to cross the street (Helen enjoyed gazing into a deep well that was situated somewhere out of her mother's sight). As we learn from the third stanza:

"One morning, intending to take but one peep
Her foot slipped away from the ground:
Unhappy event! the water was deep,
And poor giddy Helen was drowned."

On p. 9 a charming woodcut illustrates little Helen's helpless attempt to save herself from her inexorable doom.

From the 1835 "Descriptive Catalogue of Books and other publications, of the American Sunday-School Union" (no. 814): THE DISOBEDIENT CHILDREN PUNISHED. "A story of Charles and his little sister, two Sunday-school children, who disobeyed their parents and were both killed; with an account of the funeral, and the minister's address to the children. Large type, and fine original cuts."

Ad. 2: From the same "Descriptive Catalogue" (no. 939): MARY SCOTT (Poetry). "Story of an interesting Sunday-school child [Mary Scott], who was drowned; interspersed with important suggestions and reflections respecting the office and duty of a Sunday-school teacher. With a beautiful steel engraving." The anonymous author gives a prefatory note which states that "Any devoted Sunday School teacher, who has loved a Sunday School child, is at liberty to criticize the following pages. Others cannot have leave to exercise that right, until they possess the same qualification."
