AN EXCELLENT POST-INCUNABLE, FULLY RUBRICATED, WHICH GRAPHICALLY SHOWS THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN EARLY PRINTED BOOK AND MEDIEVAL BINDING; WITH ITS EARLY PROVENANCE AND PROFUSION OF WOODCUT INITIALS, IT IS IN EVERY WAY A PERFECT TEACHING EXAMPLE.

THIS EDITION HAS A FULL-PAGE WOODCUT BY URS GRAF AND A FINE TITLE-PAGE WOODCUT BORDER.

Among early printed books, this particular tome would be our first choice for classroom instruction:

1. Exposed woodcut boards; front board uncovered, revealing Medieval shaping (beveling);
2. Exposed spine, revealing alum-tawed split strap supports;
3. Exposed Medieval endbands, sewn through gatherings and laced into wooden boards;
4. Palimpsest of Medieval manuscript (formerly spine lining) visible on front board;
5. FORMERLY CHAINED as can be discerned from three nail-holes at the top of back board;
6. Inside front board the straps are exposed, revealing method of fastening with wooden pegs;
7. As yet unidentified monastic (?) bindery which utilizes decorative stamps that we have been unable to localize, inviting further investigation;
8. As yet unidentified monastic provenance, inscribed on title-page: "Liber conventus Vasburgensis" (i.e Pasburgensis / Susburgensis / Suburgensis - where is this?), inviting further investigation;
9. Original chased brass catches on upper cover attached with nails, brass plates on lower cover retained;
10. Hundreds of beautiful woodcut initials;
11. Rubricated in red and blue throughout;
12. The text is a significant hagiographical compendium, in which the biographies of Christian saints, martyrs, and heroes are arranged according to the ecclesiastical calendar;
13. Title is printed letterpress within a fine woodcut frame composed of four blocks, lightly colored in wash; the woodcut has been variously attributed to Hans Wechtlin, Hans Baldung Grün (Grien), and Urs Graf, and features vine branches, birds, and a double-eagle crest.
14. IMPORTANT full-page woodcut by Urs Graf, signed "VG" monogram with a borax box (a soldering tool used by goldsmiths and silversmiths); depicts the resurrected Christ appearing before his disciples, with the symbols of the four evangelists in the corners, surrounded by inscriptions in Latin, Hebrew and Greek on banderoles. Recorded in Bartsch, Le Peintre graveur (VII.461.5), and Hollstein, German (74.29).
