Extraordinary account of this angel-of-mercy who sought to heal the bloody and the dying soldiers who littered the battlefields of the Civil War. Wittenmyer ministered from Vicksburg to Petersburg, and -- following Sherman's troops from Chattanooga to Atlanta -- encountering many perils while witnessing ghastly slaughter. From Day 1 she dedicated herself to the impossibility of healing the wounded. "Camps and hospitals were established near my own home in Keokuk, Iowa, early in April, 1861. I began at once my ministrations to the sick in these newly established hospitals, and, during my daily visits, closed the eyes of the first Iowa soldier who died in the war. From that time on till the close of the war I was actively engaged all along the lines."

ADDED: 1-page autograph letter signed by the author, written as Chairman of the National Woman's Relief Corps Home on letterhead, dated July 13, 1897, to Mrs. Ellen J. Daniels of Charleston, WV., with original mailing envelope tipped onto recto of the frontispiece portrait. The letter reads in part: "Your letter and the money and stamps came all right and the book with my autograph was sent immediately as you desired [...] I was glad to hear from you and know and rejoice in all your successes [...] I shall hope to see you at the National Convention."

ADDED: Original Women's Relief Corps medal dated 1883.

From the Dorothy Sloan Collection, with her monogram D.S. in pencil.

Price: $350.00
