POLITICIZING THE VIRGIN DE GUADALUPE. The text of this scarce Mexican pamphlet is unusual. In it, the author Gomez Marin seeks to refute an attack on the plausibility of the apparition of the Virgin de Guadalupe, written by the scholar-historian Juan Bautista Munoz. Gomez Marin conceeds that even if there is some validity in Munoz' arguments, the work should not have been published as it could be utilized by anti-Royalists (!)
In our copy, on the verso of the title-page, is a lengthy inscription by Francisco Julián Benedito y Martin (dated 1820), being a prayer stating his belief in the apparition, and asking the Virgin to protect and defend him. For Benedito y Martin, see Medina 7868.
