Rochester Nurseryman's Guides such as this provide a "cornucopia" of some of the most vibrant American chromolithography at its apogee. Our seed catalogue contains lovely chromos of American horticulture and floriculture, fruits and flowers, ornamental trees, shrubs, roses, and much more. Pride of place is given to the Rochester Lithographing Co. who, as we learn on the title page: "designed, engraved and printed this beautiful work." Many of the plates have captions giving name of variety of plant and brief information on main characteristics and growing season. Whereas the present copy has faults, the chromos are in extremely fresh state and must be seen to be fully appreciated.
The date "ca. 1900-1910" follows that of the University of Rochester, who -- in their very useful catalogue -- note that the Soleil d'Or rose, herein described as "new," was introduced to the trade in 1900. NB: Perry Nursery Company is not listed in the Rochester city directories after 1933.
The copy in the Nurserymen's Color Plate Book Collection, University of Rochester, has only 96 pp.
