A lovely Viennese publisher's binding, elegantly and ingeniously manufactured; it is not entirely surprising that the present volume was actually published by a bookbinder (see below). No other copy of this 1798 "Toiletten Kalender" has been located. The editors of the "Musenalm Bibliographie deutscher Almanache (1770-1870)" recorded the existence of this edition but can provide no information about it.
The almanac was created for women of means and social status, and contains an unusually broad array of financial, commercial, and historical information. There are engravings of "new" fashions for both men and women (including a an outrageous English overcoat), followed charts of income and loss, tables for currency exchange; the costs of servants, and suggestions for tipping in various countries. Postal regulations with shipping and delivery schedules follow "Verzeichniz einiger beruhmten Messen und Jahrmarkte" (Directories of some famous Fairs and Annual Markets). A genealogical directory of the "most distinguished" royalty and aristocrats in Europe lists the names of rulers and prominent families by country.
Our "Toiletten Kalender" contains altogether 20 engravings by Clemens Kohl (Prague, 1754 - Vienna, 1807), an esteemed and prolific artist and engraver (see ADB vol. 16, p 421 et seq., Nagler, and Thieme-Becker). The Viennese publisher, Dr. Joseph Grammer (1760-1830) was also a bookbinder, first at no. 829 Wollzeile, then at no. 835 Grunangergasse.
Other years of Grammer's "Toiletten Kalender fur Frauenzimmer" are located in Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek, Landesbibliothek Coburg, and the Zurich Central Library.
Lipperheide (4480) had only the 1799 edition and other scattered volumes.
