New York: A.G. Spalding & Bros. 1913. First Edition. Softcover. 4to. 48 pp. Stapled as issued in original color printed wrappers, decorated to a neo-Cubist motif with football players, front cover stamped with the name of the distributor R.C. Osborn Co., Ithaca, NY (some wear and soiling). Very good. Item #1704
Rare and curious American trade catalogue in which the wrap-around cover illustration appears to have been influenced by the Cubists; it is not without interest that the Armory Show opened on February 17, 1913. This is the only Spalding Bros. Athletic Goods Catalogue that is so adorned: all other examples examined by us, issued at any date, are completely routine. ¶ Emphasizing Fall and Winter sports, the present volume is profusely illustrated with reproductions and drawings of footballs, safety equipment, shoes, jerseys, special gear, sportswear, sport coats (sic), basketballs, college pennants, ice skates, hockey equipment, toboggans, running shoes, boxing gloves, dumb bells, weights and weight training equipment, gymnastic equipment, and much more. With a complete listing of the "Spalding Athletic Library" on p. 48 which gives scores of titles then available. ¶ Not in the Albert H. Small American Trade Catalogs Collection (UVa). Worldcat lists a few scattered issues, but not this one.
