Moncrif "Les Chats" (1727)
Moncrif, Les Chats  (Paris, 1727). First Edition of the First "Cat-Book" as we know it, now recognized as one of the earliest books exclusively devoted to cats; the illustrations are absolutely charming. One of the engravings depicts a cat on the deathbed of his mistress; at her bedside two attorneys are making out her last will and testament in favor of the cat! It is believed that this woman was none other than Madame du Deffand, at whose request Coypel illustrated the work. Other illustrations show the Cat-God, cats enthroned, the tomb of a cat, a cat's theater, and more. SOLD

Paulus Niavis, Epistole Longiores Magistri Pauli Niavis. Leipzig: Konrad Kackeloffen ("Impressum liptzk per me Cunradum Kacheloffen Anno dni. M.cccc.xciiii" on colophon), 1494. ¶ Not in Goff. Ours is the first dated edition (and quite possibly the first edition) of the most significant collection of letters written by "the champion of German humanism" for the instruction of students in the arts of eloquent writing and critical thought. The letters of Paulus Niavis express praise and admiration for classical Latinity, while assailing the Catholic Church for its anti-intellectualism that is hostile to "pagan [i.e. classical] learning."
